Darker area in background represents a quarry from ancient times where the finest basalt was mined, in freezing cold, by Hawaiian artisans, sleeping in caves, and then used to make the tools that in turn hollowed out and shaped the canoes--the remnants of a race of giants, invading the sacred dwelling of the gods.
